Pensioners

The Office of Hearing Services (OHS) manages the delivery of subsidised hearing services to eligible clients. A division of the Department of Health and Ageing, the Office of Hearing Services allows clients to choose their hearing care provider.

 

​Eligibility

Australian citizens and permanent residents​ 21 years or older are eligible for free hearing services if they are:

  • A Pension Concession Card holder
  • Receiving a Sickness Allowance from Centrelink
  • The holder of a Gold Repatriation Card issued for all conditions
  • The holder of a White Repatriation Card issued for conditions that include hearing loss
  • A dependent of a Pension and/or Concession Card holder
  • A member of the Australian Defence Force
  • Undergoing an Australian Government funded disability management services and are referred by their case manager.

Entitlements

Eligible clients are entitled to receive a comprehensive range of services that address their individual needs. Services include:

  • Free hearing assessment by a qualified hearing services practitioner
  • Fitting of high quality free hearing devices
  • Clients participating in a full social life may opt to contribute a top up payment to the OHS funded portion for improved personalised amplification
  • Subsidised Annual Maintenance (with a small compulsory contribution by client or DVA) that covers:
    • Battery expenses
    • Hearing device repairs
    • Lost devices
  • In certain circumstances, clients may obtain an assistive listening device in lieu of a hearing device fitting
  • For those clients unable to benefit from a hearing device or assistive listening device an individual rehabilitation program may be offered
  • DVA clients holding a Gold card and a White card for Hearing are entitled to an assistive listening device as well as hearing devices if clinically indicated.

Before checking if you are eligible, we recommend a free hearing screening to determine if you have a hearing loss. If a loss is detected, we will help guide you through the application process.

Private Funding Options

Workcover

Noise exposure can affect your hearing. Workcover funding is state dependent. For advice, ask your local clinic.

Health Insurance

Some, but not all private health insurance policies provide rebates for hearing aids. We recommend that you check your entitlements with your health fund before purchasing your hearing aids.
